Panelist: Working with First Nations
As the Belledune Port Authority’s (BPA) Legal Counsel and Corporate Secretary, Jennifer has been instrumental in navigating relationships with partners/clients and providing advice on matters from governance to deal structuring. Helping to co-author the country’s first Impact Assessment Act Protocol, Jennifer worked with local First Nations communities and Mi’gmawe’l Tplu’taqnn Inc. (MTI) to create an engagement framework that guides mutual determination of the impacts of projects on federal lands. When provincial legislation changed in 2012 moving small claims hearings from the Court of Queen’s Bench to a separate court, Jennifer was appointed to preside over hearings in this new court for successive terms totaling twelve years. In 2015 Jennifer was appointed Vice-Chair of the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Tribunal and in 2017 she was appointed a Member of the Social Security Tribunal, Appeal Division.
Giving back to the community has always been important to Jennifer. She lends her time and expertise to her provincial law society’s bar examination committee and the Canadian Bar Association’s professional development committee. She serves as the Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation and sits on their governance committee. Jennifer is also the Director of Ballet for École de danse BoGeste, she is also the Vice-President of the Board of Directors for the school. Ms. Cleversey Moffitt has a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University along with a Master of Business Administration. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Political Science from the institution.
